access to justice with Legal aid

criminal Legal aid

Criminal legal aid is a government-funded service that provides legal representation to people who cannot afford to pay for it. It is an essential part of the criminal justice system, ensuring that everyone has access to justice, regardless of their financial means.

legal aid explained

Criminal legal aid can cover the cost of a solicitor to represent you in court, as well as the cost of other experts, such as barristers, forensic scientists, and private investigators.

To be eligible for criminal legal aid, you must meet both a means test and a merits test. The means test assesses your income and savings to determine whether you can afford to pay for your own legal representation. The merits test assesses the seriousness and complexity of your case and your ability to defend yourself in order to decide whether it is in the interests of justice for you to receive legal aid.

We have a contract with the Legal Aid Agency which enables us to apply to the Legal Aid Agency on your behalf. You will need to provide information about your income and savings, as well as about your case. The Legal Aid Agency will then assess your eligibility and make a decision about whether to grant you legal aid.

Criminal legal aid is important because it ensures that everyone has access to justice, regardless of their financial means. Without legal aid, many people would be unable to afford to defend themselves against criminal charges. This would lead to a two-tier justice system, where the wealthy can afford to defend themselves while the poor are left at a disadvantage.

Criminal legal aid is also important for the integrity of the criminal justice system. It helps to ensure that trials are fair and that innocent people are not convicted. Without legal aid, many people would be unable to present their case properly in court, and this could lead to miscarriages of justice.
