The future of the UK court system has been under review and Lord Justice Briggs has just published his report (27.07.16).
The Employment Tribunal came under scrutiny with proposals for the tribunals to become part of the County Court process. However, LJ Briggs believes this would be a retrograde step and, in our (my) opinion, the tribunals need to get back to basics; making them again an accessible ‘people’s court’ resolving workplace relationship difficulties in an affordable and down to earth manner.
Possibly more interesting was the spectre of an Online Court for claims up to £25,000. These would likely cut the costs of proceedings and may well mean a reduced need for lawyers – further reducing cost. The process would involve on-line submission of a claim and documents, review by administrative clerks and final resolution by judges – perhaps at a virtual hearing.
