Navigating life after separation or divorce can reshape how you see yourself and the world around you. This blog is part of a mini‑series by Claire Macklin, divorce and breakup coach, created in collaboration with Amicus Law, to help you approach this period of your life with clarity, confidence and a renewed sense of self.
Have you noticed how your feelings shift depending on the story you’re telling yourself?
Take a few moments to notice how you currently tell your divorce story:
- What words do you use?
- How does telling it make you feel?
- How much of it is focused on your ex – what they did, said, or how they made you feel?
If the story you are telling yourself leaves you feeling angry, stuck or helpless, you’re not alone.
But your story is yours to tell.
So how would it feel to take back control of your story?
Try asking yourself:
- What have I handled well, even when it was hard?
- What have I achieved against the odds?
- What new things have I tried or learned?
- Who has been there for me?
- What brings me joy, and what could I do more of?
When you focus on telling your story with you at the centre, it shifts. It becomes more empowering.
When you tell that version, notice:
- How you feel in your body
- How you hear your own story
- How others respond differently to you
This isn’t rewriting the past. It is simply shifting the focus so you can feel differently. Telling your story with intention can completely change how you feel.
Whether you need emotional support, practical guidance or legal advice, help is available.
